Spring Break 2010 - Day 11

Mommy took the day off, so we piled in the car with Gamma and Gampa and headed down to Disney's California Adventure (or "DCA" as Disney insiders call it). For a long time, we'd wanted to let Jonathan run wild in the water play areas, but timing, extra clothes, nap schedules, or other things always seemed to get in the way. This time, we were prepared. We brought swim trunks and a swim shirt, good sandals, and fresh, dry clothes.

"What's that?" is another of Jonathan's favorite sayings at the moment. Here, he was pointing to the big sign for Bugs' Land, which has Flik, the main character from "A Bug's Life" behind it. Behind him, all the big, blue tubing is a water play area that sits just outside of Bugs' Land. Jonathan started his play there. As he'd been at our local park in Pasadena, though, he was a bit tentative at first. And, just when he was getting comfortable, another kid came along and pushed him out of the way. Of course, the kid's parents were nowhere to be found, and I found myself stuck between wanting to have a little "teaching moment" talk with the other kid, and comforting Jonathan, whose feelings were hurt by the carelessness of the other kid. I begrudgingly opted for the latter option while giving the other kid the stink eye.

We moved on from the first water play area to this one, which is designed for younger kids. Jonathan was as interested in discovering how all of it works as he was with playing with the water. Unfortunately for him, there were no cool buttons to push. The water just shot out of the grates in the ground, and out of a large metal thing toward the top of the picture (can't see it here).

He ended up thoroughly soaked, as we'd hoped. What we didn't plan for, though, was his wanting Daddy to carry him all the way over to the baby care center. He was shivering and had a diaper the size of Rhode Island, so I didn't blame him. But I got half of my shirt soaked in the process. Oh well, all in good fun.

Christine and I had a good talk, later, about the way that kids act in situations where they're among lots of other kids who are strangers. One of the downsides to Jonathan being an only child is that he hasn't had the "benefit" of an older sibling to rough him up a bit and get him used to the ways that other kids can be careless sometimes. On the other hand, when Jonathan is an older brother some day, we hope to teach him to have fun while being respectful of other kids, especially those who are smaller than he is. Can't we all just get along?!

Having Gampa and Gamma along also provided a nice opportunity for Mommy and Daddy to go on some adult rides. We got Fast Passes and rode California Screamin' twice in a row. What a fun day 11!
