Um. Uh. Ummmmm. Well, as you can tell, the second week of spring break is coming from memory. I know that we must have had some fun on day 10, but those memories escape me now.
This, right here, is a major reason why we're doing this blog. Time moves so quickly, and we forget. Jonathan is only 2 1/2, and Christine and I already reminisce about things he "used to" do and say. Often, our reminiscing comes when we suddenly remember something that Jonathan had been doing or saying on a regular basis and somewhere, some time, stopped. "Hey, when did he stop saying, 'mup?'" There are things that seem so intimate and familiar right now, that they could never be forgotten. But, time passes. Memories fade. Not all is lost in one day's memories, of course. If something significant had happened on Day 10, I would still remember it. Heck, even if something amazing happened and was forgotten, there would be plenty of days in the future when other amazing things would happen.
But, it's important to remember the phases, growth periods, stages, or whatever we want to call them. A few months after Jonathan was born, and long before I actually posted anything on this blog, I had a few ideas for blog posts floating around in my mind. Fortunately, I wrote a few of them down, and I'll share them over time. One was the sweet, rhythmic sound that Jonathan made as he sucked down a tiny bottle of formula. The transformation from squirming, screaming baby, to a warm, contented puddle of sleepiness was magical every time. Often, Christine and I fell into contented sleep feeding him. Our lives were interrupted much more regularly back then, but the solutions were simpler and surer. I miss those times, and that's why I'm glad to have written something about them. Pictures are worth a thousand words, but a thousand words are worth a thousand words, too. Faded pictures of generations past don't tell stories of their subjects. Only we can do that.
All of that is to say that I want to remember and cherish our precious gift from God, through each new stage and phase. Someday, hopefully, we can look back together, and see all the wonder of who he is, how he has changed, and how he's stayed the same. Here are some pics of Jonathan with his new Dinosaur book from Day 10.
