Spring Break 2010 - Day 4

Jonathan has a new favorite playing and hiding spot. It started last weekend, when we let him open one side of the pots and pans cabinet so that he could play with pots and pans while Mommy and Daddy were making dinner. The occasional crash of metal pans on tile floor was jarring, to say the least. After he'd taken out the majority of pots and pans, he climbed into the cabinet, said, "Bye Mommy. Bye, Daddy," and closed the door. It was cute. That night, after restocking the cabinet, I put the lock back on. But he was there again the next day, begging to get in. So we went through a few cycles of JD taking everything out and hiding, daddy putting everything back in, and Jonathan taking everything out again. Finally, I just gave in and took the cabinet locks off. They are just pots and pans, and now I'm pretty good at getting them put away quickly.

"Hi, Daddy!" is one of his favorite phrases right now, seconded closely by "Hi, Mommy!" This is him, today. Later, he decided to lie down inside the cabinet and pull down the stack of frying pans, which included a big, cast-iron one. I'd gotten past the loud crash and went back to cleaning stuff in the kitchen, but decided to check on him. There he was, pinned down, but surprisingly calm and quiet. I asked him not to move those pans again, and he hasn't touched them since. Experience is a great teacher, sometimes!

We made snow again. Most of his clothes are in the laundry, so I dressed him in his snow outfit. It seemed fitting. He got downright giddy when it was his turn to push the button on the blender. He clapped his hands and skipped across the floor like he'd won the toddler lottery. What is it about kids and buttons, anyway?

Snow Doggie.

I  was really excited about a bath game that I read about on Fisher Price's site last night, because it combined two of Jonathan's favorite things: baths and ice. We froze a bunch of toys in a plastic bowl, and he got to see what happened as the ice melted and toys slowly became free. I'd thought about waiting until his usual evening bath time, but I was too anxious to see him go to town on the ice block.

He worked the pieces out, one by one, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he had a large chuck of ice sitting right on his skin! The partially-submerged ball was the next to last thing to come out. Last were the measuring spoons, which had ice between each different size of spoon.

I think he liked it. The whole thing took about 5 minutes to melt, and he was sad to see it go. He kept asking for ice, as though he'd lost it somewhere. I tried to tell him that it melted into the bath water. We'll work on that concept. I ran some mercy hot water after the ice cooled down his bath.

Dear Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Gap Kids, or other fine clothing merchants: yes, he's available for gigs. Mommy and Daddy have loans to pay off! :)

After lunch, we explored outside a little. We chased lizards, looked at flowers, checked out fire department water connections, and picked up lots of rocks.

He's fascinated by the gate to our parking garage. Somewhere, somehow, he knows that there must be a button that opens it.

That black crap is actually water. I know that we're making progress in outdoor behavior, because he managed to keep himself from plunging his hands into the muck. He's done it before, and it's disgusting. Today's lesson was about not dropping rocks into the fountains, or onto Daddy's feet. He had fun, and I was glad to get outside for a bit. We'll walk over to Honda to pick up our car this evening. This time, I'll take the diaper bag!
