From the picture, you'd think that Jonathan was playing hooky, but underneath that mischievous grin is a boy with a mild fever, runny nose, and hacking cough. He stayed home with me yesterday, and we ran the gamut of sick day entertainment: coloring, painting, playing with homemade snow, watching movies and PBS Kids cartoons, "cooking" with pots and pans, reading books, and a long nap.
Now that I've had a chance to watch several hours of PBS Kids programming, I have to say that I really like it. First, it doesn't bombard kids (and annoy parents) with commercials that push useless pieces of plastic every couple of minutes, and second, because the stories, therefore, are longer and require more focused attention. A few months ago, I flipped on some afternoon cartoons on network television, and was overwhelmed with the cacophony of loud music, flashing scenes, and blaring commercials. Talk about over stimulation! Anyway, I'll probably write more about television watching soon. Christine and I have had some good talks about our developing philosophy about the boob tube.
He figured out how to use the caps to make a chain of markers. I think we got to six markers before the whole thing fell apart. Fortunately, the markers and paint are washable!
Today brought more coloring and painting. J.D. is still in his pajamas and just went down for a nap. He's alternated between that wonderful cuddly, clingy, "hold me, Daddy?" side of being sick, and the grabby, whiny, punch-me-in-the-back-while-I-was-trying-to-write-this-blog-and-get-a-timeout side of being sick. I completely understand why many of our friends and other parents have written about the guilty pleasure of their kids being sick--once they grow legs (metaphorically speaking), kids never snuggle in like they did when they were babies, until they're sick.I turned one of yesterday's paintings into Jonathan's own Rorschach. I couldn't help it. I am a shrink, you know. So, let me ask you: what might this be?
