Happy (belated) Birthday, Maddie!

Jonathan's "cousin," Maddie, turned three on November 2nd. In addition to asking to see a picture of James, Maddie's little brother, whenever Christine uses her laptop, Jonathan also fancies pictures of Maddie. I hate to out him like this--and don't tell him that I said anything--but, Jonathan kisses the screen whenever Maddie is on. Fortunately, it will be a while before Jonathan can read.

I took this candid series of pictures this August, when we stopped to visit Lisa, Keith, and Maddie. Perhaps these are the first few moments of a budding love?

She's so cute. I should talk to her. But what do I say? Anything. Just say anything. Hey, why am I thinking in complete sentences? Bah! Forget about that. Focus, focus. OK, I've got it, I'm going to say something. Right now.

He's so cute. I wish he would talk to me. What is he thinking about? Maybe I should talk to him. I am the older one, here. Plus, girls mature faster than boys, so that makes me extra mature. Hey, why am I so knowledgeable about child development? Oh, forget it! Just focus. Hmm . . .

 Sigh . . .

Of course, I could always give him my, "Hey cutie, I've got a Bob the Builder tool set" look.

Ahh. Now we're getting somewhere . . .

All silliness aside, we look forward to seeing a second-generation friendship develop. Maddie, we hope you had a great birthday, and we send lots of love and kisses to you and your family.

How cute! I'm sure that's exactly what Jonathan was thinking!! :-) I bet in that last photo he's scheming, "Maybe if I pinch her with these pliers she'll get the hint that I like her!" Such a boy. :-)

Ha! Something like that happened to me in elementary school. There was this cute girl with blond hair who kept catching my eye. So, on impulse, I hit her arm every time I walked by. Just when the orchestra in my life's soundtrack was beginning the love theme, after a little "I really like you" tap in the cafeteria line, she told the lunchroom teacher on duty. It broke my heart, and, maybe more importantly, prevented me from smacking any future love interests as a first sign of my affection.
