Jonathan came down with a 102 degree fever around noontime today, so Christine brought him home. He was a sad sight to see when he got home. Christine put in the Shrek III DVD, and Jonathan just curled up on the couch and watched with glazed-over eyes. No whimpering, whining, or crying, just quiet and still. Sad. The good news is that the fever is coming down with the help of Tylenol. The bad news is that he can't go back to school tomorrow. They require 24 hours fever-free before kids are allowed back. Makes sense, but doesn't help my internship application process.
He seemed fine last night. Christine said that he felt warm when he woke up briefly in the middle of the night, but he'd been all bundled up and sleeping for a few hours. She said that he'd been a little more clingy than usual this morning when she dropped him off for school. Otherwise, no symptoms.
We'll post an update if he ends up going to the doctor or anything. As of right now, he's up and around a bit, talking and asking for food. So maybe he's feeling a little better.
UPDATE: 6:00 p.m. Jonathan and I fell asleep on the couch this afternoon. When we woke up at 5:30-ish, he was burning up. Temporal thermometer gave a high number, so we had to go rectal--not pleasant for either of us. Thank goodness for digital thermometers that give readings in 5 seconds. I can't imagine having to hold the old-school, mercury-filled butt rod up there for a whole minute--as parent or child! As a kid, I remember gagging, drooling, and getting tongue cramps while I held that stupid glass thing under my tongue for 20 minutes while the nurse went out and had wine and cigarettes or something. But she'd always come back in, right when I got tired and tried moving the thing to the side of my mouth. "No! Keep that in place. Here. Hold it there. I've gotta go pick up some groceries. It should be done by the time I get back."
Where was I? Oh yeah, the rectal temp. It came back at 104.5. The thermometer beeped like it was a fire drill. After getting my call to his paging service, our doctor called back, asked about any other symptoms (there were none), and said to give Jonathan some Tylenol and keep him comfortable. He said that the fever is usually the first symptom, and that tomorrow will bring others. Otherwise, if the fever lasts more than 4 days (days?! yes, I heard that right), we'll check in with the doctor again. We'll let you know what develops tomorrow. Hope Mommy's tiredness last night wasn't the beginning of something for her.

I'm not sure if this is the same for boys as girls, but whenever Maddie got fevers that high it was a urinary tract/kidney infection. Would your doc do a urine sample to rule that out? Maddie never presented with the usual symptoms...just the fevers. Poor JD and poor you guys! A sick kiddo is just no fun for anyone.
