Blueberry Picking: Memorial Day Weekend #2

So back up a few weeks to Memorial Day weekend. We haven't finished the story!

After going to the Teaching Zoo, our little family wandered through the hills and over to Underwood Family Farms in Somis. It was a perfect way to finish up our day.

Jonathan caught about 5 minutes of sleep before we pulled up. I knew he'd have too much fun if we woke him up, so we did, and he did. :)

J-dog helped daddy pick blueberries . . . one for the bucket, one for me, one for the . . . He ate many more than actually made it home with us that day.

Along the way he decided the dirt was pretty cool, too. He grabbed a huge chunk of it and carried it all over the place, finally bringing it to mommy like it was the most amazing present ever. Hmmm.

He carefully studied his blueberries before popping them in his mouth. Most of them were blue. I noticed he quickly spit out the one green one he tried to eat. :)

He had so much fun running up and down the rows of blueberry bushes and playing in the afternoon sunlight. That red spot on his lip? That's from an earlier part of our weekend. More details soon.

I have such clear memories of summer days spent picking blueberries in Puyallup at some u-pick farm. I remember eating more blueberries than i really could stomach because they were sooo good! Something about blueberries fresh off the bush. Nothing compares. We took about a pound home with us and enjoyed every last, little berry.

Much to Jonathan's liking, the farm also had a kid area with a mini petting zoo (meaning, some goats, a couple sheep, a llama, and some chickens), a big sand box, and this very cook wooden truck. Being the amazing driver he is, Jonathan wasted no time hopping in the driver's seat. Sure, the animals were cute, but nothing is better than driving!

Cheese!

The farm stand was filled with the most beautiful fresh produce. Every color of the rainbow was represented, and Jonathan got a hands-on lesson on the variety of veggies available to eat. He wanted to try them all!

He nearly tore the kale to shreds. It was by far his favorite texture. We'll see if he ends up liking the flavor. :)

Our blueberries are long gone now, and Jonathan's dirt-covered shorts are all clean, but those fresh, delicious berries are not far from my mind. I can't wait for Jonathan to experience annual blueberry picking days like I did when I was growing up. Hopefully I can make him all sorts of blueberry goodies just like his Gamma made me! :)

Ahhh...blueberry picking! This brings back some memories. When I was in Jr. High I got a summer job picking blueberries at a local farm down the road. Every morning I'd have to get up super early, pack a lunch and either ride my bike or walk the hilly mile to the farm. When you're earning money by the pound, you learn to pick really fast! The trick is cupping your hands together, stripping the berries with your thumbs and letting them roll like a funnel down your hands and into the bucket below. Unlike my horrible job working for my Uncle Barry on a raspberry picking machine {hello bugs and moldy berries!}, which ruined me on raspberries forever, I could still eat blueberries all day long! :-)
