Pumpkin Patch Day 2011

A couple of weeks ago, our friends Caden and Ellie came to Eugene for our annual trip to the pumpkin patch (of course, mom Tara came too!). We had a day filled with pumpkin patch fun planned, and we were blessed with good weather. We decided on Lone Pine Farms, just nine miles northeast of our house. It was a great pick! Lone Pine is a little commercial, but it has all the makings of a fun day at the farm for the kids. I would definitely recommend it for people with kids who are looking for a variety of fall activities in one place. The farm itself doesn't quite measure up to our experiences in Oak Glen (CA) or at Smallwoods in Peshastin (WA), but it was a super fun day to share with our friends!

To start our visit off, we spent a good chunk of time getting some serious energy out on the playground. The kids went down the slides, climbed up in the fort, went on the merry-go-round, and much more. If these kids know how to do anything, it's play!

The kids then had a great time feeding the farm's many goats. They especially loved using the "feed elevator" to get the food up to the goats on the goat walk.

These days, a trip to the pumpkin patch isn't complete without a ride on the Cow Train. The kids had a blast, and Jonathan did great. Check out the look of pure joy on his face in the middle picture. He loved it! It was just like a little roller coaster—complete with hills and dips. I'm sure he was squealing with joy!

Lone Pine Farms is known for their gigantic Corn Maze (there's an awesome image of it on Google Maps—just search for Lone Pine Farms, Junction City, OR to take a peek). The only problem with the maze is that I'm pretty sure we would never see the kids again! Fortunately, I think they know that, so they provide a free hay maze for the kiddos. They had so much fun trying to find their way through all of the hay bales. It took them a while (with a few trips back to the beginning for Jonathan), but they finally made it to the other side.

They loved posing at all of the different photo opp spots. Lots of silly faces!

The boys always have so much fun together. They love wrestling and being silly, and the farm was the perfect spot to let them get their sillies out. Jonathan also decided to hitch a ride on Mommy's leg!

Next we were off to find the perfect pumpkin! We splurged and took the hay ride out to the patch (it's quite a ways out to the patch from the main farm area). The kids loved watching the horses, and Jonathan loved feeling the wind in his hair. He even had time for a bit of a rest!

It is such a joy to share these special times with a dear old friend and to watch our kids built such strong friendships so early!

Because it's a bit of a ways out to the patch, our time there was limited to about 15 minutes of our entire visit (way too short, if you ask me). But boy did the kiddos know how to pack those 15 minutes with fun! We searched and searched for just the right pumpkin. At first, Jonathan wanted to get a green pumpkin, but it was a little squishy on one side. They he picked a tiny pumpkin, but Mommy thought one just a little bigger would be good (hindsight—let him pick a tiny one if he wants it). At last, we ended up with a 39 pounder! Phew, was Mommy glad we had draft horses to pull that thing back to the main farm! :) The kids had so much fun finding all sorts of bugs, checking out the rotting pumpkins, playing in the mud, and just plain being silly together.

Time for smiles (and goofy faces)!

Of course a trip to the Patch wouldn't be complete without the annual "sit on the pumpkin and try to smile for mommy" picture. :)

It was time to head back with our treasures, so we jumped on the trailer, found our comfy hay bale, and enjoyed the views for the ride back.

Back at the main farm, we had more fun climbing on old tractors, enjoying some fresh kettle corn, and checking how tall we are this fall. :)

After all of our fun at the farm, the kids worked up quite an appetite. So the moms decided to make them a special lunch . . . pumpkin-shaped PB & Js! They had a fun post fall-fun lunch, followed by more playtime before our friends had to head home.

We had such a fun day with our friends! We're so thankful to live closer to one another now and be able to share in the making of these special memories. We loved sharing our fall-fun day with each other!
