My First Bike

Summer in Eugene is almost synonymous with cycling. This is a bike town through and through. There are nearly two hundred miles of bike paths in Eugene, and all of them are well-traveled. Cars are more sparse in the summer as the fair-weathered Eugenians hop on their bikes and travel with their more die-hard cycling friends.

With one of the town's nicest bike paths practically right at our door, we knew that Jonathan would have to join the other gazillion cyclists Eugene boasts. Gamma and Gampa surprised him with his very first bicycle for his half birthday in May . . .  a Buzz Lightyear bike! They also let him pick out his very cool helmet. Gampa helped Jonathan put it together while he was visiting.

Once it was together, it was time to hit the trail. After an evening of riding around the neighborhood with Daddy and Mommy, I decided to take him out to the Fern Ridge Path and see how far he could go. He did a great job and made it about a mile to his favorite part of the trail: a telescope overlooking the wetlands.

On the way home, our little cyclist decided he wanted run instead of ride, so Mommy got to push the bike back to our neighborhood. I'm so proud of our little dude. He did great and I'm sure that we have lots of riding ahead of us this summer and for many years to come!
